The Yield Map Is Worth More to Everyone Except the Farmer
Modern farm equipment records yield, soil condition, and application rates at high resolution. The agronomic value of that data is substantial and the question of who may use it has never been cleanly settled.
What Is Being Collected
A combine harvester records yield continuously as it moves, geolocated to within centimetres. A planter records seed placement and population. A sprayer records application rate and location. Soil sampling adds nutrient and organic matter measurements.
The result is a detailed record of what was planted where, what was applied, and what was harvested, at sub field resolution, accumulated season after season.
That data supports genuinely useful decisions: variable rate application matched to soil productivity, seeding density optimisation, and identification of underperforming areas requiring drainage or amendment.
Why It Is Valuable Beyond the Farm
The individual farmer benefit is real and modest. The aggregate value is where the commercial interest sits.
Data from thousands of farms across a region reveals which seed varieties perform under which conditions, how inputs respond across soil types, and what yields are emerging before any official estimate is published.

The farmer generates the data and captures the smallest share of its value, because the value comes from aggregation and no individual farm can aggregate. That is the same structure that appears wherever individual contributions become valuable only in combination.
The Trading Question
The fourth row deserves separate attention. Real time yield data across a large acreage is a genuine information advantage in commodity markets, arriving weeks before official production estimates.
That has produced persistent concern that a company aggregating farm data could trade on it, or sell it to somebody who does, while the farmers generating it have no such advantage.
Whether that would constitute anything unlawful is unclear, since agricultural production data is not material non public information about a security in the ordinary sense. The concern is commercial fairness rather than securities law, and it has been addressed through contractual commitments rather than regulation.
What the Contracts Say
Terms vary considerably and the recurring provisions are worth knowing.
Ownership. Most agreements now state that the farmer owns the data, which sounds decisive and is not, because ownership without control of use accomplishes little.
Licence. The operative term is the licence granted to the company, and its breadth determines everything. A licence permitting use for providing the service is narrow. One permitting use for product development, research, and disclosure to affiliates and partners is not.
Aggregation and de identification. Nearly all agreements permit use of aggregated or de identified data without restriction, which is where the commercial value sits. Whether field level agricultural data can be meaningfully de identified is questionable, since a field boundary is itself identifying.
Portability. Whether the farmer can export their data in a usable format to a competing platform, which determines whether switching is possible.
Termination. What happens to the data if the relationship ends, and whether the company retains rights to data already collected.
The Industry Response
An industry led effort produced a set of core principles on data, addressing transparency, farmer choice, portability, and restrictions on unauthorised use, with participating companies able to display a certification seal.
The initiative is voluntary, has no enforcement mechanism beyond removal of the seal, and represents genuine progress in disclosure rather than a change in the underlying bargaining position.
Several farmer organisations also established data cooperatives, pooling members data and negotiating collectively for its use, which addresses the aggregation problem directly by putting the aggregation in farmer hands.
The Practical Position for a Farmer
The useful questions before adopting a platform are what licence is granted and how broadly it is drafted; whether data can be exported in a standard format; whether the agreement permits disclosure to input suppliers who also sell to the farmer; and what happens on termination.
The interaction with equipment is also worth noting. Data collection is frequently bundled with connectivity features that are difficult to disable without losing functionality, which means the choice is less free than it appears.
The Bottom Line
Precision agriculture data is generated on individual farms and becomes valuable in aggregate, which means the party creating it captures least of its worth. Contractual ownership has largely been conceded to farmers and the licence terms determine what that ownership is worth, which is usually not much. The mechanism that would genuinely change the position is collective aggregation by farmers themselves, which exists, is small, and is the only approach that addresses the actual asymmetry.
