Case Interview Math: The Ten Calculations Worth Memorizing
Case interviews test mental math under pressure, but the actual math repeats endlessly. Master a small set of moves and the numbers stop being the hard part.
Why the Math Is Even There
Case interviews, the problem solving conversations consulting firms use to hire, include arithmetic for one reason. Consultants calculate in front of clients, on whiteboards, in meetings, mid sentence, and a candidate who dissolves when asked for 15 percent of 80 million will dissolve in front of a CFO too. The good news is that interview math is shallow. No calculus, no statistics, just multiplication, division, and percentages applied to business quantities, under mild time pressure, with an audience. That combination rewards preparation more than talent, and the preparation is finite because the same calculations recycle forever. Here are the ten worth making automatic.
The Core Four
One, percentages of large round numbers. Break them into tens and fives. 15 percent of 80 million is 10 percent, 8 million, plus half that again, 4 million, so 12 million. Never compute 15 times 80 in your head when two easy steps exist. Two, growth over multiple years. For small rates, approximate compounding by adding, 5 percent growth for three years is roughly 15 to 16 percent total, and say you are approximating, interviewers reward candidates who know when precision matters. Three, the rule of 72. Money doubles in roughly 72 divided by the growth rate years, so 8 percent doubles in about nine years. It converts compounding questions into division. Four, breakeven. Fixed costs divided by contribution per unit. A factory costing 2 million a year making widgets that earn 40 dollars each over their variable cost needs 50,000 units. This one calculation anchors half of all operations cases.
The Market Sizing Kit
Five, population scaffolds. Memorize a handful of anchors, about 330 million Americans, roughly 130 million households, US GDP near 30 trillion dollars, and lifespans near 80 years so each age year holds around 4 million people. Every US market size builds from these. Six, the segmentation chain. Population, times the relevant fraction, times frequency, times price, spoken aloud as you go. The interviewer is grading the chain, not the digits. Seven, sanity checks. After any estimate, divide it by something knowable. If your answer implies every American buys nine mattresses a year, the chain has a broken link, and catching it yourself is worth more than a right answer.
Interviewers forgive a wrong number caught by a sanity check faster than a right number delivered without one. The habit being tested is checking, not calculating.
The Business Judgment Three
Eight, margins in both directions. Move fluently between margin and markup, a product selling for 125 dollars with a 25 percent margin earns about 31 dollars, and know the difference between gross margin, which subtracts only direct costs, and operating margin, which subtracts everything. Nine, payback period. Investment divided by annual profit gained. A 10 million dollar machine saving 2.5 million a year pays back in four years, and stating whether that is fast or slow for the industry turns arithmetic into judgment. Ten, per unit conversions. Annual figures to daily, divide by roughly 360, hourly to annual for a full timer, multiply by about 2,000 hours. Cases jump between time scales constantly and the conversions should cost you zero thought.
How to Drill
Practice out loud, because the performance layer is half the test. Talk through structure first, this is 10 percent plus half of 10 percent, then give the answer with units, 12 million dollars per year. Round aggressively and announce it, call 47 fifty and correct at the end if it matters. Write big numbers as words and zeros, 80 million as 80 and six zeros, since dropped zeros are the single most common fatal error. Ten minutes a day for a month beats a weekend cram, this is muscle memory, not knowledge. And in the room, slow is smooth, a five second pause to structure beats an instant wrong answer every single time.
